Cambridge City Breaks And Useful Things To Know

Cambridge is known all over the planet for being the home of the University of Cambridge, one of the most prestigious centres of learning in the United Kingdom. The University includes some 31 colleges including; St John’s College, Selwyn College, Sidney Sussex College and Trinity College which dominate the city. Although a large number of tourists arrive in Cambridge with their main wish being to see the University, Cambridge has so much more to see besides the University.  Happily there are a large number of bed & breakfast accommodation in Cambridge to choose from (Important: the last paragraph has more info about this).

The city dates back to the medieval period and therefore there there are numerous of superb architecture. You may wander around the ancient streets, enjoy one of the various parks and gardens or you could take a punt up and down the River Cam. If punting sounds inspiring, then one can hire a punt or for something different one can rent a chauffeured punt. There are a small number of firms offering this facility along the river. Otherwise a trip up and down the River Cam in a narrow boat.

Cambridge is also widely known for its churches, with thirteen of them being located within the city’s boundaries. Of the thirteen churches found in the centre of Cambridge it is All Saints Church which is usually accepted as one of the most incredible examples of Gothic revival architecture to be found in England. A further church of interest is Church of the Holy Sepulchre, one of only 4 round Norman churches in England. The smallest church in Cambridge is St Peter’s Church, which is hidden away in a tranquil part of the town. Probably the most breathtaking panoramas across Cambridge and colleges of the University can be found from the viewpoint of the Great St Mary’s Church, the University church.

As there is such a large selection of tourist attractions available in Cambridge, it would be nearly impossible to view them all in just one day.  Therefore we advise that you spend a minimum of 48 hours in Cambridge. If you and your family are currently thinking about spending a few weeks in the city of  Cambridge it is incredibly important that you reserve your  accommodation at your first opportunity because, sadly hotels and guest houses in Cambridge tend to be alarmingly busy and are often fully booked months in advance. If your group is large you might find that apartment accommodation in Cambridge prove to be less expensive alternative.
